AEO · authorised economic operator
Customs grants you trust – and assesses your partners for it.
AEO status brings simplifications at the border. The price is a demonstrated level of security that does not stop at your own gate.
Authorised economic operator is a status granted by the customs authority after examination. It assesses compliance with customs rules, a satisfactory accounting system, financial solvency and – for the security variant – appropriate security standards.
The supply chain part sits in those security standards: business partners must, as far as possible, be checked for reliability, and security requirements must be passed on contractually. That turns a customs topic into a supplier topic.
Where the examination looks
- Business partners whose reliability was never assessed on record.
- Transport and warehouse providers without agreed security standards.
- Access to premises and loading areas by external personnel.
- Goods flows that cannot be traced without gaps.
What is required of the chain
- Partner checks
- Check business partners for reliability as far as possible and record it.
- Passing on
- Pass security requirements to partners contractually.
- Access
- Access control for people and vehicles, external firms included.
- Traceability
- Document goods movements traceably.
- Personnel
- Reliability checks for security-relevant positions, where permitted.

Frequently asked
Is AEO worth it for an SME?
It depends on trade volume. The simplifications pay off above a certain number of clearances; building the security level is useful even without the status.
Must our partners hold AEO too?
No. But your own status becomes easier, because vetted partners support your assessment.
How does it relate to ISO 28000?
They overlap substantially. A management system to ISO 28000 delivers a large share of the required evidence.
